Plans to construct a new modern standard railway line from Kenya’s Mombasa seaport to Rwanda through Uganda are in final stages and the work is expected to end by 2017.

Uganda’s Minister of State for Privatization, Aston Kajara has told the country’s parliament that the railway would improve trade and transport between the three countries.

“The three heads of state are determined to seeing the success of the railway construction. Ever since they met in Kampala, so much has been happening to develop the railway line,” Kajara said.

The three presidents are expected to meet again in Mombasa, Kenya in a week’s time.

Kajara said that the presidents had agreed that each state should develop the railway line within the confines of their own borders.

The new railway, according to the official, however, will not replace the old one.

Kenya has already established a railway levy to develop the railway line.

In Uganda, government has started identifying companies to construct the railway and according to Kajara, a number of Chinese companies have expressed interest.
