Prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and king of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum married his senior wife, Sheika Hind Bint Maktoum, in 1979 in possibly the most lavish wedding ceremony of all time. The cost: $137 million. A massive hall was built from scratch in Dubai to accommodate more than 20,000 guests, and a five-day holiday was declared for the event. The sheikh rode his horse into all the villages in Dubai and passed around food to everyone, undoubtedly contributing to the cost of the event.
