UK Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening says the relationship between Zambia and the UK will be based on trade and not aid.
And Greening announced her government would contribute K15 million to enable girls in Zambia have access to contraceptives. Speaking when she delivered a keynote speech in Lusaka on Wednesday, Greening commended Zambia for the high economic growth that the country has continued to record.
She also commended Zambia for the peace sustained from the time the country got its independence.
“Zambia and the UK will continue to be friends and I wish to commend Zambia for the economic growth that it has continued to enjoy for the past few years,” she said.
Greening said the British High Commission in Zambia had continued working in collaboration with the Zambian government to enhance trade and business activities between the two countries.
She said sustainable growth which the country had continued to experience would create vast employment opportunities.
“The relationship between Zambia and the UK will be based on trade and not aid,” she said.And Greening said the UK was contributing K318 million to Zambia’s education sector to support the government’s efforts to improve educational standards, especially among girls.
“The UK is determined to support Zambia’s efforts in improving the education sector, as well as education standards among girls in the country,” she said. “My government is also making another contribution of about K15 million as support to enable girls have control over their fertility.”
