Oscar Pistorius’s love of guns may give the impression that South Africa is a gun-toting country with a right-to-bear-arms culture similar to that of the U.S., according to NewsLoop.

In fact there is relatively little gun ownership in South Africa — an average of 12.7 guns per 100 people. By comparison, in 2012, the share of American households with guns was 34 percent, according to a survey, New York Times reported.

But the number of gun murders in South Africa is astonishing, according to NewsLoop. South Africa has a homicide-by-firearm rate of 17.03 per 100,000 people.

That’s much higher than the U.S. which had 4.8 homicides-by-firearm per 100,000 people in 2012, according to a study by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
